Meat Sauce

Meat sauce is very versatile.  It can be used to layer lasagna, prepare with penne, rigatoni, spaghetti, or any pasta that can hold on to the sauce.

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 can tomato paste (about 3 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • pinch red pepper flakes
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 ounces tomato paste (optional)

  1. Cook onions until soft and translucent with half teaspoon of salt
  2. Add minced garlic and tomato paste (if using)
  3. Deglaze with 2 ounces of red wine (optional)
  4. Add beef and continue to cook until browned
  5. Add in tomato sauce and cook for 1-2 hours (if using for lasagna, remember it is going to cook for another hour, so just 1 hour initial cooking time is fine.
