Wine Log: April 26, 2024
Caymus (Napa, California USA) – This was a gift from new friends. While I would never dream of spending $125 on a bottle of wine, even my birthday, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to open it. My birthday rarely falls on a Friday, and Friday is always pizza day if I am not working. While most want to go out and celebrate their birthdays, I much prefer to stay home and relax. If it is my birthday, I don’t want to deal with who can or cannot come at a certain time, what their dietary restrictions are, whether or not they live close to me and/or what type of food is their preference. My birthday, my choice, not theirs. So, while I was ecstatic to enjoy this at home with my wife and my favorite pizza, honestly it is not my favorite. Granted, it is a fantastic bottle of wine, rich, bold, flavorful to say the least. But for me, it was a bit to “thick” on all of those characteristics. It was definitely worthy of my personal celebration, I much prefer something dialed back a bit like Bonanza which is done in the same style from the same family vineyard. Whether or not the price matches the flavor or the experience, I would be much happier with 5 bottles of Bonanza in place of this. Then again, I will always be a fan over 4-5 bottles of any wine, rather than an expensive one. Should I become wealthy one day, I think I might feel the same way.
